The field of IT is incredibly dynamic, with trends and scenarios shifting rapidly. What's in demand today may be outdated tomorrow, making it essential for IT professionals to continuously update their skill sets. Certification programs play a crucial role in keeping up with the ever-changing market. Nowadays, there is a plethora of IT certifications available, catering to various technologies and offered by different vendors like Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco, Apple, among others. Consequently, the training and certification sector has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry, reflecting the importance of staying current in the fast-paced world of technology.

Based on your existing skill-set and requirements in your job, you select a certification which you want to undertake. For example, if you are working in company X and your work is to deploy cloud solutions at your client site, then you may choose to get certified for cloud computing. This will not only add credibility to your resume but will also empower you with the skills required to do the job more effectively.

Now that you have chosen the certification you want to do, the next question that comes up is, whether you should undergo a training program with a training provider or do self-study. Opinions are divided on both the formats. A lot of people propose that self-study is the best way to prepare for a certification exam. While this might be true in the way that you will definitely learn more and will explore a lot of new ideas and information, you might not learn the exact details which you will need to clear the certification exam. In-fact, an empirical study shows that the success rate to clear the certification exam increases considerably when the candidate undergoes a training program to prepare for the certification exam.

These training programs are designed in such a manner that focussed information is provided to the candidate which will help them learn the concepts quickly and prepare them for the exam. This increases their probability of clearing the test considerably. The trainers which undertake these training sessions are industry experts and are well aware about the learning requirements of the students.

If you opt to undergo training through a training provider, selecting the right vendor becomes paramount. With hundreds of training vendors vying for your investment, it's crucial to conduct thorough research before committing. This diligence ensures that you choose a platform that truly delivers on its promises.

Scrum Certification Professional Development focuses on enhancing skills and knowledge in Scrum, a popular Agile framework for managing complex projects. It involves earning certifications most popular being Scrum Master Certified (SMC) and Scrum Product Owner Certified (SPOC). These certifications validate one's expertise in Scrum principles, practices, and methodologies. Professional development in this field includes attending workshops, participating in training courses, engaging in practical Scrum projects, and continuous learning through reading and community involvement. It aims to improve one's ability to facilitate, implement, and optimize Scrum processes, leading to more efficient project delivery and higher quality outcomes.

It is often seen that Agile has been implemented successfully in different projects. But when it comes to Product Management or NPD (New Product Development), many people get sceptical regarding implementation of Agile. Now it has to be understood that Agile is not a methodology which can be used in a cookie cutter way across any organization. A lot of tweaking and customization is required to make it work. So, in product management, a proper assessment is required to see if Agile implementation will improve performance or not.

Here also, we need to see if the following two criteria are being fulfilled or not:

  1. Requirement Volatility : It is important to identify the volatility of requirements and whether working in Sprint will actually improve customer satisfaction, reduce uncertainty and help PM teams become more productive or not. If requirements are fixed in sand and are not dynamic in nature, it will not make any marked improvement even if the teams work in sprint. Also, Agile Product Life Cycle Management involves a lot of new learning, so it needs to be checked if the team will be comfortable in this transition or not.
  2. Frequent customer Interaction: External customers are big stakeholders in any Agile effort. In many product management scenarios, we have seen that customers just give their specifications and just go away for months and months. And finally when they come back for the product, it is completely different from what they expected, because market dynamics change and the expectations change as well. So the biggest benefit is actually to the customers themselves, and this is what the PM team should explain in details to the customers so as to get their buy in. Without their pro-active support, it will not be possible to implement Agile in any way.

If we are talking about New Product Development, then Agile actually becomes even more crucial and important.  That is because neither the customers nor the PM team has any benchmark to follow. So, frequent discussions and brain storming sessions followed by change in requirements or prototypes will be mandatory for successful NPD. So, it is important to realize that Agile can be implemented successfully in Product Management as well, provided it is understood properly and used in the proper context. Also, management buy-in and customer buy-in are important components in this scenario, and a good AGILE coach will also be very beneficial.

Scrum roles: Scrum Master in Agile

Scrum roles: Scrum Master in Agile

The Scrum Master in Agile is a key role responsible for ensuring the Scrum framework is followed effectively within a team. They act as a facilitator, helping to remove impediments and obstacles that might hinder the team's progress. The Scrum Master also supports the team in maintaining a clear focus on their goals, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and collaboration. Additionally, they work closely with the Product Owner to ensure that the product backlog is well-managed and prioritized, and they help the team to understand and implement Scrum practices and principles.

There are three roles in scrum: Product Owner, Team, and Scrum Master. Together they form the Scrum Team.

The Product Owner is tasked with optimizing return on investment (ROI) by analyzing various product aspects, translating them into a prioritized list, determining which items should take precedence for the next Sprint, and continually adjusting prioritization based on ongoing analysis. They bear accountability for the profit and loss of the product, particularly in the case of retail products. However, in internal operations, the Product Owner isn't directly responsible for ROI as in commercial product scenarios, but they still aim to maximize it. Sometimes, the Product Owner and the customer may be the same individual, especially in internal application contexts. Alternatively, the customer base could encompass millions of individuals with diverse needs. In such cases, the role of the Product Owner closely aligns with that of a Product Manager or Product Marketing Manager.

The Development Team creates the commodity that the Product Owner requires to go ahead. The Team in Scrum is “cross-functional” – so that they can contribute accordingly as per the increment which is required to come with the product. As the team is cross-functional, so they promote multiple learning. Each person in the team has some specialization and keep on learning other specialties as well as that might be required for the project.

The Team should be available throughout the project. They shouldn’t split their time to other projects while handling this project. Their responsibility is to self–organize themselves to achieve each goal and creating the product as per each sprint plan.  Once the product owner makes a complete list of things to be done, the development team members foretell how much they can do in one sprint, and they further decide how they will accomplish it.

The role of the Scrum Master is crucial in facilitating the development team's adoption and mastery of Scrum principles to drive business value. They actively support the team, Product Owner, and the organization in enhancing their knowledge and skills to achieve greater success. Although the Scrum Master isn't a team leader, project manager, or representative, their primary focus is serving the team. They work to eliminate obstacles, shield the team from external distractions, and encourage the adoption of contemporary development methodologies.

Scrum Roles

Scrum roles are designed to ensure the effective implementation of the Scrum framework, each contributing to the overall success of the project. The Product Owner is responsible for maximizing the product's value by managing the product backlog, prioritizing features, and ensuring clear communication of requirements to the team.

Scrum roles are crucial for effective teamwork and project success:

  1. Product Owner: Manages the product backlog and prioritizes work to maximize product value.

  2. Scrum Master: Facilitates the Scrum process, removes obstacles, and ensures adherence to Scrum practices.

  3. Development Team: A self-organizing, cross-functional group that delivers a potentially shippable product increment each sprint.

An important feature of SCRUM is little number of roles. These Roles have direct influence on the realization of a project. The SCRUM core roles are believed to be accountable for the production of deliverables which meet the acceptance criteria in every sprint which in turn ensures success of the entire project.

The following are the three principal roles in Scrum:

  1. The Product Owner- is the voice of the business,
  2. The Development Team- that converts ideas into functionality
  3. The Scrum Master -who enables the team and process

The Scrum Master has his/her focus on the progress of the process and also is known to guide the scrum team.

The Scrum Master is responsible for planning the sprints and prioritizing the sprint backlog. He/she is also involved in managing development process. The Scrum Master also helps in identifying and eliminating the obstacles that is currently hindering the performance of the team

The scrum master enables the group to follow the workflow and ensures that the tasks in the sprints are completed on time. A Scrum Master can either be the team leader or act as the project manager. A scrum master is ideally considered to have a good balance of skills such as technical expertise, problem solver, team player and a problem solver.

The Scrum Team

A Scrum team does not mean the typical development team. A scrum team has its own special capabilities.

Stated below are few features of a Scrum team

  1. Cross-functional teams: the team has members from various disciplines in order to help achieve the approved functions. Software engineers, programmers, architects, analysts, system admins, testers etc. could be the members of the teams.

Scrum Master certification validates an individual's understanding and proficiency in applying Scrum principles and practices. This certification process typically involves comprehensive training that covers the Scrum framework, roles, events, and artifacts, with a strong emphasis on the responsibilities and skills required for an effective Scrum Master. Candidates are assessed through rigorous examinations to ensure they possess the knowledge needed to facilitate Scrum processes, remove impediments, and guide teams towards continuous improvement. Achieving Scrum Master certification demonstrates a commitment to mastering agile methodologies and enhances one's ability to lead and support Scrum teams effectively.

The Scrum Master Certified (SMC™) certification is a globally recognized credential that validates an individual's expertise in Scrum principles and practices. This certification equips professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively serve as Scrum Masters within Agile teams. By mastering key concepts such as the Scrum framework, roles, ceremonies, and artifacts, SMC™ holders are prepared to facilitate and lead Agile projects to success.

Scrum Master training, according to SCRUMstudy, equips individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate Scrum practices effectively within their teams. This training covers core principles of Scrum, including the roles and responsibilities of the Scrum Master, and essential techniques for fostering communication, managing impediments, and promoting continuous improvement. Participants learn to facilitate Scrum events, guide teams in adopting agile practices, and support the Product Owner in backlog management. The training also emphasizes the importance of servant leadership, where the Scrum Master acts as a mentor and coach, empowering teams to self-organize and deliver high-value products efficiently.

The process of being certified as an Agile/Scrum Master involves attending two and three-day classroom sessions (respectively), at the end of which the certificate is awarded. The certification is not awarded based on any formal exam conducted to evaluate how proficiently you have grasped the concepts of Agile/Scrum. You might admittedly be skeptical about how much of Agile or Scrum are you going to master in these two days. If not, is there a need to be certified at all? Will having an Agile/Scrum Master certification automatically further your career?

To put it simplistically, the answer to the above questions would be a NO.  You cannot become an Agile/Scrum Master in two days and being certified does not automatically propel you into having a successful career in managing software development. However, the answer is not such a simple “no”.

Concepts of Agile/Scrum are vast and complex and cannot be mastered in a two-day classroom training session. The only way to truly master Agile/ Scrum is to internalize the concepts and practice them on a daily basis. It takes several months to years of such practice, depending on how well you have implemented the practices, to master Agile/ Scrum. The two days of classroom sessions, however, puts you on the right track and makes you more focused about using the tools and knowledge outlined in the domains. The principles of Agile/Scrum are worded in a simple language, however, the essence of these methods lie in how the tools can be implemented effectively. Such insights are best provided by trainers who have firsthand experience in implementing them.

As Agile/Scrum Methodologies become more widely adopted in the software development industry, it is not uncommon for several job recruiters to screen applications based on the criteria of Agile/Scrum Certification. It can act as a gateway to a career as an Agile/Scrum Master. It is important to remember that a certification does not act as a substitute for hands-on learning that is gained from implementing the knowledge in a work environment.

Agile Scrum roles

In Agile Scrum, there are three key roles crucial to the success of a project: the Product Owner, the Scrum Master, and the Development Team. The Product Owner is responsible for defining and prioritizing the product backlog, ensuring that the team is working on the most valuable features to meet business goals. The Scrum Master serves as a facilitator and coach, guiding the team in understanding and adhering to Scrum principles, removing impediments, and fostering a collaborative environment. Finally, the Development Team consists of professionals who are responsible for delivering the increments of a product during each sprint. The Development Team in Agile Scrum plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, incremental product releases. This self-organizing, cross-functional group typically comprises professionals with varied skills and expertise, collaboratively working to convert the product backlog into valuable increments within each sprint. The team is collectively responsible for all aspects of development, from design and coding to testing and integration, ensuring that each increment is potentially shippable. Unlike traditional project management structures, the Development Team operates without a formal leader, emphasizing collective ownership and accountability. The SBOK™ Guide underscores the importance of communication, collaboration, and adaptability within the Development Team to foster continuous improvement and respond swiftly to changing requirements, ensuring that the end product aligns closely with customer needs and expectations.
